Combined Artist work

Maxim Zavialov & David Loftus

During this project, I have researched a wide range of artists: David Loftus, Maxim Zavialov, Gillian Wearing and Samsofy. Each artist had their own unique concept, yet individually linked to my wider vision of the project focus on commercial photography. I learned different styles from David Loftus on ways to compose the food I was photographing, I learnt the polaroid-photography style which I used in one of my shoots to promote the concept of Instagram-like photography. I adapted Gillian Wearing’s method of writing thoughts out and photographing them, to grab the attention of the desired viewer, to convince them to buy a food product. Finally, I explored Samsofy’s concept of making Lego figures appear life-like, in a way of promoting a product to a desired consumer, in this case, to advertise to a younger generation with bright colours and characters to persuade a child to eat a healthier food - such as a smoothie bowl.

Initially, I explored the theme of the World Around Us but eventually explored commercial (especially food photography) - as food is a vital need for the World Around Us, and the way we live our lives.

I experimented with these different artists, such as using different media types and editing software for individual artists. I experimented with shooting on a digital DSLR camera, which provided high-quality, detailed, commercial-style images. I also used my phone to experiment with taking images for the intent of posting in on social media, to gain the authentic look of an ‘Instagram-worthy’ image. Finally, I shot on an Instax SQ1 camera to gain the polaroid image I needed for my take on the Maxim Zavialov concept. I also edited using Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Lightroom throughout my portfolio and used Adobe InDesign for my final piece. The media type I used was subjective to the concept I was experimenting with, yet each media type was interesting to experiment with an use throughout my project. My favourite media type to shoot with was the combination of the Instax SQ1 and the Canon 4000D DSLR because I thought that the picture-in-picture concept was interesting and pleasing to look at, which developed into a unique commercial photography concept.

  • My final outcome produced an entire food magazine, with pages full of photographs, using different concepts and techniques I had learnt throughout my portfolio.

  • I hoped to create an interesting yet professional commercial magazine to capture the attention of those reading through the magazine, convincing them to make the dishes I provided the recipes for, or buy some of the products I was ‘advertising’, which I think I achieved well throughout the magazine of ‘OG Foods’.

  • If I had more time, I would have liked to create another magazine or ‘issue’, further exploring Samsofy’s concept, possibly advertising toys, to advertise (using Samsofy’s Lego concept) to be aimed at a younger generation.

  • I enjoyed building my magazine, adding personal elements throughout. I wrote about different markets I had been to, gaining the opportunity to review and share these different places and experiences I had. I also added Spotify codes throughout, with each song having different links to the photographs I took, some explicit but some also implicit reasons for the songs I had embedded into my magazine pages - for example, some exploring the origins of where the bands or artists were originally from. I also named the magazine ‘OG Foods’ after a friend whom I nickname ‘OG’, which also added a secret personal note about my final piece and project.

  • Finally, I hope viewers will understand the commercial side to my photography, but also some of the personal, sometimes comedic undertones to my work. Overall, I hope that viewers of my work, especially my commercial photography, will want to buy or cook the product I have photographed. I hope the viewers enjoy reading my final piece and appreciate some of the small, personal details I have added throughout my final piece and portfolio as a whole.
